INTERVIEW: TIJUANA BIBLES

Tuesday, 25 August 2015

Though their composition is of a raw substance and primal acoustic, times for Tijuana Bibles are sumptuously sweet as they prepare not only for the launch of their "GHOST / DANCE / MOVEMENT" EP and European Tour commencing next month but also newly announced support slot for The Enemy at their SOLD OUT Glasgow date in November. Here's the new video and a quick Q & A with the band:

So how's festival season been treating you, a success?

"It's been amazing. We knew we'd have a long way to go to better last year, having played T in the Park, Wickerman and Belladrum but this year has been even better. The crowd reaction has been immense every time! Even when we've aired new songs that people are probably only hearing for the first time. We couldn't have asked for more really and to be invited to play the legendary Isle of Wight festival was the icing on the cake... For want of a better expression! We still have a couple of European festivals to play so we're very much looking forward to it. Doesn't get better than festival season!"

Are you ready for your Glasgow headline and European tour next month? Any nerves or excitement, what are your thoughts?

"I didn't really have any nerves 'til now- Got a little flutter of excitement just there! I'd say the level of anticipation for this Glasgow show is greater than any other we've been part of. It wasn't so long ago we supported Deap Vally in the Oran Mor and it was a huge deal for us at the time, so going back there so soon to headline it is pretty special for us. It's a Saturday night in Glasgow so it's bound to be momentous!

As for the rest of tour, we're going to some far off cities, some of which we don't even know how to pronounce (I'm looking at you Nizhniy Norgorod) so we're just gonna go, do our thing and see what sights await us! We might even take a beer each for the bus. Amsterdam, Moscow and Hamburg in particular should be quite interesting, I think."

You're releasing an EP, what can you tell me about the production process? How would you describe your sound to new listeners?

"Yeah, it's called 'Ghost / Dance / Movement' and it'll be out in a couple of weeks. It's a deep swampy  rumblin' rock n roll record. Ideally it should be listened to through the rattling radio of a 1967 Mustang, bombing through the desert, but I reckon it sounds just as good when waiting for the bus in the pissing rain! It was produced at Rubbergum studios, where we recording everything, with Thomas McNiece. Generally speaking, we'll have the songs finished in rehearsals and demoed to a decent standard before heading in to record but we always like to leave as much space as possible in the demos, don't layer it too much, then when we're in the midst of the recording process we have the advantage of spontaneity.
Sometimes we can surprise ourselves when the tape is rolling, something unexpected happens, even a mistake, and it might just be that little bit of magic that turns a good song into a special one."

Here at The Candid Mixtape we like an insight into the artist's record collection, so what would be on your ideal mix?

"Oooof.... I'll try to keep this as simple as possible! Myself and my brother Danny usually have Black Rebel Motorcycle Club or Queens of the Stone Age blasting. James is a big Blues guy but I know, currently, he's heavily digging Father John Misty. Mikey is mad on The Cribs so he's usually got a rare Japanese pink vinyl spinning. Obviously, we have a lot of shared tastes but I'd be here all day. I will admit though, we do listen to some horrendous shit in that tour van; Abba, Toto, Whitney (God rest her soul). We may even have attempted to relive the scene in 'Almost Famous' when everyone sings Elton John 'Tiny Dancer'. But I can neither confirm or deny that!"

Any band with a mutual love of Whitney is a success in my books. Expect to see this lovely lot everywhere as of next month!
