There are times in life when you encounter new human beings and they catch you completely off guard, there's an instant realisation of talent or a subtle otherworldly aura that's clear from a brief conversation or even introductory handshake, there's an underlying charismatic trait or world understanding that you perhaps wouldn't have expected to find in them and their mystery leaves you slightly breathless because for a brief second you had underestimated this person and had already in your mind disregarded them for another spawn of generic artistry. That feeling admittedly hit me when I had a brief encounter meeting Declan McKenna last month. When you find a young individual, creative or not with an already established message and unwavering level headedness it's important that it's recognised and not left to waste.
Declan released his second single entitled Paracetamol last week, highlighting his ever ingenious lyricism and already recognisable, trademark instrumental style. At 16 he is music skin and bone.
Yet again, Declan distances himself from the norm in terms of stereotypical young teen songwriting avoiding the usual angst or infatuated love driven pop we're known to despise but expect from artists his age, bypassing everything going straight for the bitter truth. He can be praised respectively for his writing ability and instrumental/vocal talent, adding his raw charm to that mix makes for a bewildering but respectable individual.
