INTERVIEW: THE VAN T'S @ KING TUTS #KTNYR17

Thursday, 2 February 2017
As King Tuts New Years Revolution returned to the legendary venue for another year, Friday night headliners The Van T’s prepared for their first gig of 2017.

Events like #KTNYR brings together the best grassroots music the city has to offer, taking over the venue for two weeks in January, offering a variety of acts from all genres the chance to take to the stage. For a band like The Van T’s events like this can give them a chance to thrive on a renown stage to listeners old and new: “The whole New Year’s Revolution and Summer Nights thing is hugely important for bands. If anything, it’s a showcase and it gets people out of the January blues. The Glasgow music scene is good, it’s one of the best things in the whole of Scotland at the moment. I feel we’re at that stage of coming out of an ice age and it’s a whole new thing that’s coming, it’s very important because if we don’t support it now it’ll go by so quickly.”

Becoming increasingly synonymous with their 90’s grunge drenched set Chloe suggests first time viewers: “Expect loud music, glitter, glam rock, heels & sparkly trousers, just fun, we try and make things not too serious.”

Chloe also gives advice to other girls hoping to get into music: “Just go in as you would with anything else just don’t think twice about anything like that. We went in just for the music and not for the imagery. I think it’s just whatever you feel confident with. I know over the years it’s built mine and Hannah’s confidence up other than just going out and playing practice is important the more you do it the better you’ll get.”

Away from the stage, the band are working on a follow up to their previous single “Fun Garçon” which was released last September: “We’re in the studio doing demoes hopefully for upcoming singles. There are more gigs and a tour coming up in February.” Entering 2017 hoping to “spend time with closer friends because last year was a bit sh*t for people you just wish you spent more time with. Don’t leave things too long and respect each other as much as possible.”

Amid new releases The Van T’s will also have a busy Summer of festivals on the cards with an invitation to play SXSW in Austin, Texas already looking hopeful, other than that: “trying to do festivals abroad would be a good thing but hopefully releasing an album by the end of the year.”

If the King Tuts headline was anything to go by, 2017 will be a notable year for the Glasgow four-piece.

Do festivals like #KTNYR encourage you to go to more local music events?
